For that reason, health professionals have highlighted the importance of early detection- something that many minority communities might not be able to access.</p><p><br></p><p>The National Cervical Cancer Coalition actively supports women in coping with cervical cancer and helps spread awareness of their plight. In 1951, the young mother of five visited Johns Hopkins Hospital, in Baltimore Maryland, one of few hospitals that would treat poor blacks during that time. She learned that she had a deadly malignant tumor on her cervix, which took her life later that year.
