Lisha Bell is hosting a podcast series to amplify the voices and stories of BIPOC Angel Investors to inspire women of all backgrounds to pursue venture capitalism as a means of creating positive change.

For each episode, Lisha is inviting women in positions of power who are working to be a part of the change they want to see in the world to share their stories. Not only have these women conquered a male-dominated industry, they have taken on the necessary burden educating others in the industry on the importance of diversified portfolios.

Countless opportunities lie in wait, but they necessitate a proactive approach to uncover.

Bridging the gap in generational wealth building for people of color is a critical issue that extends beyond its direct impact on the Black community; it affects all of us. True progress and prosperity can only be achieved when everyone is given an equal opportunity to participate in spaces where innovative leadership can thrive and access to generational wealth is within reach. Entrepreneurship can be a powerful pathway for economic development, with the ability to create economic agency and the control necessary to shape ones own destiny. It also creates work environments that better utilize skills and tools endemic to different cultures and can be spaces where assimilation to white culture is not necessary for success. By dismantling barriers and fostering an inclusive environment for wealth creation, we can forge a stronger, more just society that benefits everyone, regardless of their background or race.

In this episode, we are joined by Himalaya Rao-Potlapally who shares more about investing in diversity, closing the gap in generational wealth building for people of color, and empowering black women founders. Himalaya is the Managing Director and GP of The BFM Fund, a seed-stage fund focused on highly scalable Black-led deal flow within the United States. Prior to becoming a GP, Himalaya got an MBA and specialized training in Venture Finance and worked in seven different firms as an Associate, Deal Lead, and Fund Manager. Through her work in creating equity within venture capital, she has been recognized as one of the Rising Stars in Venture Capital by the NVCA/Venture Forward, a Forty under 40 recipient by the Portland Business Journal, and a VCI Fellow.

Prior to becoming a GP, Himalaya got an MBA and specialized training in Venture Finance and worked in seven different firms as an Associate, Deal Lead, and Fund Manager.
We need more black women on cap tables as limited partners, equity holders, and owners. There is a lot of media coverage on disparities between black and white families in paycheck, mortgage rates, wealth, and worse single black mothers have been put in a negative net worth. All these are negative reinforcements, and we need a story that is beyond black people not making enough, and its more important that we put our money to work immediately for the long term. We must be thoughtful and strategic to build wealth. Learn how to grow money, put each dollar to work, add value, and build wealth using a sustainable strategy.

Join the conversation with Kimberley Nixon as she shares about investment, PE funds, VC funds, and how to turn your experience into more than a paycheck to benefit the community and build a portfolio. Kimberley is a Brooklyn native now residing in LA. She is a wife, a mum, and the founder and managing partner at Open Venture Capital. Kimberley started Open Venture Capital after 20 years working across financial services, consulting and as an executive for several consumer and health and wellness brands.
LA Riots, 30 years later, a conversation with Dad

This is a very special episode of SWV, featuring my Dad, Billy Bell. The Los Angeles riots were a series of race riots that occurred in the city of Los Angeles in 1992. The riots began on April 29, 1992, and lasted for six days, causing $1 billion in property damage. The riots were triggered by the acquittal of four police officers who had been videotaped beating Rodney King following his arrest on suspicion of drunk driving.

The Los Angeles Riots sparked a racial divide that still exists today. It is still one of the most important events in modern American history and has influenced many other social movements, such as Black Lives Matter.

The LA Riots are often referred to as one of the most destructive civil disturbances in U.S history, which led to over 50 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries. Join me as we recap the aftermath of these riots.

In this episode, Lisha introduces us to Cassandra Cummings, founder of the Stocks and Stillettos Society and registered financial advisor. Cassandra shares how she has created a community of over 100.000 black women by inspiring them to start on their own wealth walk.

While working as a financial advisor, Cassandra quickly became an expert in investing, finance, and money-growth strategies. However, she soon learned that her passion was to share this knowledge with like-minded women who she wanted to help achieve their own financial goals.

She created the Stocks & Stillettos Society Facebook group to create a sisterhood of African-American women who teach other about venture capital, angel investing, and more. In this collaborative space for women of color, Cassandra and her members share information, strategies, and insights to help each other thrive.

Through investment education and financial literacy, Cassandra not only promotes diversity in this white male-dominated space but is also investing in our future. She has recently created another group within the Stocks & Stilettos Society, the Queens of Capital. With a holistic approach, she helps them elevate their overall net worth by sharing insights into angel investing and other opportunities traditionally reserved for white men.

Cassandras final takeaway: Stay true to yourself on your wealth walk!

From BK to OAK , Shamieka's story

In this episode, Lisha introduces us to Shamieka Preston, business initiatives consultant at Wells Fargo, member at Pipeline Angels, and loving mom, sister, and wife. At Wells Fargo, Shamieka develops and manages change, adoption and communications plans for employees. However, theres more to Shamieka than meets the eye!

Shamieka began investing in her early twenties and has now managed to accumulate her wealth over time by, in simplified terms, being cheap, not stupid. Not only did her frugal money mindset get her there, but one of her most successful strategies was to diversify her portfolio; this meant investing in stocks and properties, short-selling, and longer-term through angel investing and equity financing.

However, Shamieka is also invested in closing the ever-present gender gap in venture capital. Historically, black women, non-binary femmes, and people of color have received the least amount of support and funding; Shamieka and her husband are fighting to change this. By funding and creating this space for women and people of color, they encourage diversity in this white male-dominated space.

Shamieka is also a member of Pipeline Angels, where trans women, cis women, nonbinary, two-spirit, agender, and gender-nonconforming founders are supported and funded; they aim to create capital for these start-ups and businesses to close the gender gap in angel investing.
